A freeway is a specially designed high-speed road that allows fast and smooth traffic flow. Because of the speed and volume of vehicles, special rules apply to freeways to ensure maximum safety.

Vehicles Not Allowed on Freeways

• Animal-drawn vehicles (e.g., carts, wagons).

• Agricultural vehicles (e.g., tractors, harvesters).

• Pedal cycles (bicycles).

• Motorised cycles (low-powered scooters).

• Motorcycles with an engine capacity of less than 50cc.

• Vehicles powered by electricity (e.g., small electric scooters).

• Motor tricycles

• Special vehicles under 230 kg that are designed for use by physically disabled persons.

These vehicles are banned because they are too slow, vulnerable, or unstable, making them dangerous on a freeway.

In addition to the general rules of the road, the following rules apply specifically to freeways:

1. No Stopping on a Freeway

You may not bring your vehicle to a stop on a freeway unless it is an emergency (e.g., breakdown or accident). If you must stop in an emergency, move your vehicle as far left as possible onto the shoulder, switch on your hazard lights, and ensure it is safe for other drivers.

2.Obey the Edge Lines

Do not drive to the left of the yellow edge line (the emergency shoulder). This lane is for emergencies only.

Do not drive to the right of the white right edge line (this marks the boundary of the freeway).

3.Keep Left, Pass Right

You must always keep to the left-hand lane except when overtaking.

Do not remain in the right-hand lane after overtaking.
